W5: Discussion Forum 1 – Inference Example
Must post first.
Our two chapters this week focus on the use of inferences. At the beginning of Chapter 11 in the “Why Does this Matter?” video, an Air Force Training Program is discussed. This example is expanded upon at the end of Chapter 11 in Case Problem 1. Please locate this case under the Chapter 11 Reading, Review, and Additional Practice section (specifically Chapter 11 Review) and read it for our discussion. It is also covered in the Chapter 11 Interpreting the Results assignment with details about the calculations, so you can read and review it there if you prefer.
Here is a summary of the calculations to help you answer our discussion questions.
Current Program: The mean = 75.066 and the standard deviation = 3.945.
Proposed Program: The mean = 75.426 and the standard deviation = 0.321.
As we can see from these descriptive statistics, the programs are close in completion times, but the proposed program does have less variation than the current program. When a test of the differences between the population means is conducted, it is not surprising it concludes the sample data does not show that the two programs differ in mean completion times. When a test of the differences between the population variances is conducted, it also not surprising the conclusion is the two programs do differ in variance.
Based on this information, please answer Questions 4 & 5 from the case:
Question 4: What is your recommendation? Explain.
Question 5: Can you suggest other data or testing that might be desirable before making a final decision on the training program to be used in the future?
**For this forum, you must post your initial response before you can see other posts.**
